Her Story

Why Maxine Started Little Pillars Learning

Maxine spent 5.5 years as a classroom teacher - and she loved it. She loved watching children light up when something finally clicked, and she loved being part of those moments of discovery. But over time, she began to notice something that troubled her: even with the best intentions, the classroom simply couldn't meet every child where they were.

Students who needed more time, different approaches, or one-on-one attention were falling through the cracks. Not because they couldn't learn, but because the system wasn't set up to give them what they needed. For children with dyslexia, ADHD, Autism or other learning differences, the gap was even wider.

That's when the idea for Little Pillars Learning was born. Maxine wanted to create a space where no child was left behind; a warm, home-based environment where every student could receive a program designed entirely around them. Not a one-size-fits-all curriculum, but a truly personalized learning journey.

She trained in the Science of Reading. An evidence-based approach that follows the 5 pillars of literacy and developed a strong foundation in mental math strategies that help children understand numbers deeply, not just memorize facts. Every program begins with a thorough assessment so Maxine can build a plan that targets exactly what each child needs.

Today, Little Pillars Learning serves families across Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Maxine works with children from Kindergarten through Grade 8 in both math and literacy and the results speak for themselves. Students who once dreaded reading now look forward to their sessions. Children who struggled with numbers have found confidence. Families have seen real, lasting change.

"I created Little Pillars because I believe every child deserves a teacher who sees them; truly sees them and builds them up from exactly where they are."
